不 or 没? How to Choose the Right Negative in Chinese

“不”还是“没”?中文否定表达怎么选

Learn how to choose between 不 and 没 through everyday situations, contrasting examples, tone-marked pinyin, and a short practice exercise.

通过日常场景和对比例句,理解“不”和“没”的区别,避免只按过去或现在判断,并用附带拼音和译文的小练习巩固用法。

You want to say that you did not drink tea this morning. You remember that bù不 means “not,” so you reach for it automatically. But Mandarin asks you to make another choice: are you describing a habit or decision, or reporting that an event did not happen?

This guide focuses on everyday statements with bù不 (bù) and méi没 (méi). Learn them through situations rather than matching each one to an English tense.

Start with a pair you can picture

The first sentence can describe a habit or a choice in context. The second reports a missing event. Someone who normally loves tea could still say the second sentence. MandarinChineseSchool's explanation of negation covers this distinction between habitual actions and actions that did not happen.

Use bù不 for habits, preferences, and decisions

Try these sentences in a conversation about your routine:

Notice that the final example describes a quality. Also notice the pronunciation: before another fourth tone, bù不 is pronounced bú. Here, pinyin shows that spoken change.

Use méi没 for an event that did not happen or is unfinished

Before an action verb in these examples, méiyou没有 (méiyǒu) can replace méi没. The second sentence leaves open the possibility that you have started reading; the missing part is finishing.

Why “past versus present” is an incomplete rule

To say “don't have,” use méiyou没有 even when you mean right now:

To negate shì是 (shì, “to be”), use bù不shì是 (bú shì):

These patterns are covered in Mango Languages' guide to 不 and 没. Look at the meaning and the predicate, not just the time word.

Practise choosing a message

Write a sentence for each situation before checking the answers:

  1. Your friend offers coffee. Explain that you do not drink coffee.
  2. Someone asks about yesterday's shopping trip. You did not buy coffee.
  3. You are busy right now. Explain that you have no time.
  4. Someone thinks you are a teacher. Correct them.

Suggested answers

  1. wǒ我bù不hē喝kāfēi咖啡。 — Wǒ bù hē kāfēi. — I don't drink coffee.
  2. wǒ我zuótiān昨天méi没mǎi买kāfēi咖啡。 — Wǒ zuótiān méi mǎi kāfēi. — I didn't buy coffee yesterday.
  3. wǒ我xiànzài现在méiyou没有shíjiān时间。 — Wǒ xiànzài méiyǒu shíjiān. — I don't have time right now.
  4. wǒ我bù不shì是lǎoshī老师。 — Wǒ bú shì lǎoshī. — I'm not a teacher.

For your next practice session, make two cards about the same activity: one describing your usual choice, and one describing yesterday. Add a small drawing or situation prompt instead of an English word such as “not.” Ask a teacher or language partner to check whether each sentence communicates the situation you intended.
